Scripture Reference: Luke 22:47-53

Wednesday Fasting: Jesus’ betrayal enters into the Gospel narrative during a meal. This particular meal was instituted back in the book of Exodus, commemorating when God executed justice on the people of Egypt, a people who used their power and authority to oppress the people of God. This theme of betrayal enters in when “there arose a new King over Egypt, who did not know Joseph” (Ex. 1:8). Egypt was a place where the people of God did well. In fact, Joseph back in the book of Genesis served Egypt, so Pharaoh’s oppression and systematic enslavement of the Jewish people was a massive act of betrayal.

Any time we participate in any form of oppression, hate or self-exaltation or preservation, we are siding with Pharaoh, an enemy of God and his people. Today we need to take some time to examine our lives. Are we in any way serving as oppressor instead of heralds of Shalom (peace)? Sacrifice the satisfaction of a meal today to pray and consider these things. Listen to God, meditate on the story of the Exodus and betrayal of Christ and learn where you may need to repent. Are you a herald of the Kingdom or are you siding with Judas and Pharaoh?
