Why Jesus Never Jumps the Shark

Speaker: Reid S. Monaghan Series: Easter Messages Topic: Exposition Passage: Hebrews 1:1–1:3

On Jumping the Shark

Why Jesus Never Jumps the Shark

God Speaks in Jesus (Hebrews 1:1,2)

  • God Speaks

  • Last Days?

#1 Jesus never jumps the shark as he isGod's definitive word to us

Jesus is God on the Streets (Hebrews 1:3)

  • Radiance of God's Glory

  • Exact Imprint of His Nature

  • Upholding the Universe

#2 Jesus never jumps the shark as he is God Incarnate

Death and Resurrection (Hebrews 1:3)

Jacob’s Well is a church for those who have grown weary with religion yet still find themselves thirsty for God...

Religion Says

  • Religion says – do these things and God/gods/Universe will like you
  • Religion says – if you are good enough, you might get accepted
  • Religion says – if you are not like “those people” you are good with God
  • Religion says – take these 5 rules and call me in eternity
  • Religion says – it’s all up to you kid

Religions always jump the Shark…Religion will always be around, new ones created because we know we need transcendence, we know we need to be fixed, we know we need God.  But it just hangs an excessive burden around the necks of men

#3 Jesus never jumps the shark as he is the DYING and LIVING GOD

On the Move Today

#4 Jesus Never Jumps the Shark as he is working in LIVES TODAY

Community Meditation Questions

  • The book of Hebrews tells us that “God speaks to us” through Jesus. Why is it helpful to look at a person (Jesus) in order to understand who God is and what God is doing?
  • Why does man-made religion inevitably lead to guilt/frustration or pride/human arrogance? In the gospels people did not feel either as they spent time with Jesus? Why?
  • What Jesus did for humanity is described  as making “purification for sins.” Is there anything in your life that you think God could never forgive? Anything that just makes you feel dirty? What if Jesus purifies you from THAT? What would that mean in your life?
  • Discuss the following: What difference does it make that Jesus is not simply a dead guru, but the living God.
